What about using a fetoscope during labor to determine if the heart rate is dropping and if medical intervention or relocation to a hospital is ideal? I am new to understanding the principles of unassisted birth and with your website, so possibly you've covered this elsewhere. Thanks! Maryn Green My opinion...don't be your own midwife during labor. It takes years of training to be able to listen and interpret and so much more. Hire a midwife that is competent with using a fetoscope during labor if you are concerned. This is not the opinion of unassisted birthers, per se, but as a midwife (who has had unassisted births myself!) I would never attempt to listen and interpret my own baby in my own labor. I've relied on my intuition regarding baby's condition as well as other signs.
